Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. Psychometric examinations were administered by the hospital's psychological laboratory (also known as the Dept. of Psychology) to persons referred by staff, private physicians, or the Dept. of Mental Health, to determine general intelligence level and other psychological characteristics; tests were administered at the outpatient department, known as the Southard Clinic since the mid-1940s. Psychometric testing case files were created by clinical psychologists as patients were tested.
